The education field has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning techniques that allow for the flexibility of recorded courses and class meetings which are conducted via real-time videoconferencing software. However, even these online options may not be enough for students who prefer the live interaction of a classroom in person.
Live learning online is a viable alternative to these other online learning methods that allow students and instructors to communicate in real-time via a videoconferencing program like Zoom. Students can ask questions, clarify confusion and help them gain a better understanding of the course material.
Although there are many advantages when it comes to live learning however, it can be difficult for some students to adapt to this kind of online learning. This study examines the student’s readiness for live learning and identifies the key factors that influence it. The findings show that motivation to learn as well as self-directed communication are the main influences. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis as well as a post hoc test to evaluate the differences between gender, undergraduate, graduate and sub-degree students. The study found that postgraduates are better prepared for live learning than undergraduates and sub-degrees.
To ensure that students are prepared for a Live Session it is recommended that instructors set out clear expectations of what they will need to know and do prior to and after the session. This means providing additional materials like summaries, gist quizzes, concepts maps, outlines and study guides. Instructors can also create activities that reinforce what students have learned, like reviewing, rehearsing debating, discussing, and analyzing.
